Huge queues and busy scenes as ‘UK’s largest sustainable fashion market’ comes to Newcastle

See 17 images of Sunday’s fun – and thrifty – shopping experience as rain fails to dampen anyone’s enthusiasm when the Clothes Cycle pop-up market tours to the city for the first time

Customers showed they were definitely in the market for some sustainable fashion when a Clothes Cycle touring shopping experience made its Newcastle debut on Sunday.

What’s described as the UK’s largest sustainable fashion market stopped off in the city for the first time on a tour of the north and set up shop inside Vertu Motors Arena in Scotswood Road where more than 80 sellers filled the sports venue – home of Newcastle Eagles – for a day-long shopathon. And judging by images of the busy event the visitors, many of whom had been queueing up outside in the rain upon arrival, loved every minute of it.

Clothes Cycle is all about sustainability and its pop-up markets – selling environmentally-responsible clothing and accessories – focus upon affordability and fashion in its quest for a “greener, more stylish world”. And its idea is to make shopping a thoroughly enjoyable experience with additions of street food; a bar; live music and the likes of art classes or workshops.

Sunday’s visitors packed out the market space, browsing rails of sustainable fashion on the look-out for bargain buys and there were also baskets of items for just £5 and £10. Live DJ sets played throughout the day and there were opportunities to have nails painted or even a tooth gem fitted as well as a chance to take part in a clothing swap.

Clothes Cycle was set up by university student Poppy Collingwood-Cameron at the end of 2022: for more about what it offers see its website here.
