After seeing that the Grimace Shake was coming to the UK, I decided that I needed to try the product which I’ve seen all over social media for the last year. Videos on TikTok and YouTube, part of the #GrimaceShake trend, have been popping up on my feed, but I was yet to taste the product that they are centred around.
Originally introduced as ‘Evil Grimace’ in 1971, the character was quickly retconned to be a smiling, purple blob, and a friend of Ronald McDonald. In a similar way to the fact that McDonald’s have never revealed the origins of Grimace or what kind of creature he is, the company have also been tight-lipped about what the flavour of a Grimace Shake actually is.
I headed to Grainger Street and picked myself up a Grimace Shake, and was immediately struck by just how vibrant the purple colour was, just as it is on Grimace himself. When I was ordering, I saw that the following is written as a description of the product: ‘A purple, berry-flavoured milkshake, a combination of vanilla soft serve ice cream and berry flavours.’
When I sat down ready to have the first taste of the Grimace Shake, I was looking forward to seeing if I could work out exactly what this mysterious flavour is. As soon as the liquid hit my taste buds, I got a strong flavour of blueberry, as well as grape, which I imagine explains the colour.
I am not usually a fan of very fruity ice cream, but I was surprised that I enjoyed the Grimace Shake, as it had more of a sweet and sugary flavour than what I was expecting. It had a similar taste to Vimto, which made me think that there may be blackcurrant or raspberry in there too.
Whatever the exact flavour combination is, I can say that I’m a fan of the Grimace Shake, it has a really nice blend of sweetness and fruitiness which I am a fan of, and it’s not incredibly rich like some milkshakes can be. As a product, it is simple but effective, and the ongoing social media trend is sure to keep it as a popular menu item.
So, I can certainly see why the Grimace Shake has developed such a surprising fanbase, as despite the simplicity of the product itself, it tastes very nice and its social media success has helped to make it the most talked about item on the McDonald’s menu.
