Idris Elba admits he was ‘overwhelmed and angry’ in emotional plea during BBC documentary

Luther star Idris Elba has candidly shared his feelings of being ‘overwhelmed and angry’ while posting a heartfelt video in 2019 urging people to put down their knives. The actor has been actively involved in the fight against knife crime for years, even inviting a film crew last year to document his journey to understand the root of the problem for his BBC documentary, Idris Elba: Our Knife Crime Crisis.

The star is on a mission to find real solutions to the issue, expressing optimism by saying there ‘is hope’. “No issue is permanent, there’s got to be a way out of it,” he can be heard stating at the start of the documentary. As the one-hour documentary begins, Idris reflects on his “rant” from 2019 where he said in a video: “If you’ve got a knife, or know someone who’s got a knife, tell them to stab themselves.” He further warned that “you’re going to stab your future if you stab someone else.”

“You become a murderer, you go to prison, you ain’t got s**t. For what? For some beef that lives within your community. You need to see past that, we have to say something about it,” reports the Mirror. Fast forward to the present day, the father of three can be seen reflecting on his words from 2019, admitting he felt ‘overwhelmed and angry’.

Speaking to the cameras, he confessed: “Five years ago, I had this rant, I just felt quite overwhelmed and angry. It’s just a constant flux of young people murdering each other.”

The star then went on to explain that although knife crime happens every day, that particular day was “really painful” for him. He recalled feeling the “need and the urge” to speak up after seeing a news story about a teenage girl being stabbed to death in an East London park, which prompted him to make the video.

Over the last five years, Idris has been dedicated to campaigning, raising awareness of knife crime, and pushing for solutions. Watching the documentary for the first time, The Wire star confessed it made him weep.

However, the documentary also highlights success stories of teenagers who have turned their lives around and walked away from knives thanks to mentors, schemes, and interventions. Speaking to the Mirror, he said: “I wouldn’t mind a big old debate. “We need to be screaming it now – this is a call to action.

This is an opportunity to really look at the slices of perspective on offer. Some you will agree with, some you won’t, but at least get engaged.”
