Dean McCullough revealed he had managed to sneak tea bags into the jungle on Thursday 21 November’s edition of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here, breaking the strict rules of the TV show. Appearing to have forgotten there are cameras around the camp, and that all the celebrities are wearing mics, Dean dropped some tea bags in a pan and then tried to secretly offer cups of “hot water” to his campmates, including Coleen Rooney and Alan Halsall.
Barry McGuigan initially refused a cup of what he thought was muddy water, but when he took a sip he realised it was a very welcome hot brew following a night when everyone in camp had dined on tasteless rice and beans. However, hosts Ant and Dec hinted to viewers that such rule breaks would not be tolerated.
On the aftershow Unpacked on Wednesday night, when the tea bags were first spotted, Dec said: “Keep an eye on tea-gate,” as Ant added: “ That will be dealt with today, believe me.” Host Sam Thompson warned the pair: “You’ve got to penalise him for something, like somehow,” while Dec explained: “I think we’ve seen the tea, but we’re just checking that we’ve actually seen it. But the problem is, to penalise them we normally take food off of them, but they haven’t won any food.”
In the end, the celebrities were punished on Thursday, as Melvin Odoom returned from a trial with only five of 10 cup cakes they should have been awarded. He also had a note, explaining that the cupcakes had been taken away due to contraband in camp, and that there was now an amnesty so the campmates could own up to anything else they had snuck in without further punishment. Dean handed over his teabags, and Tulisa owned up to having a sachet of salt that had been given to her by an “insider” on the first day. The insider in question turned out to be Melvin, who admitted he had handed her the illicit seasoning.
It’s not the first time that celebrities have been caught out secretly bringing things into the camp. They are allowed one luxury item each, though food is forbidden, but in 2012 Made In Chelsea star Hugo Taylor brought in salt and pepper sachets hidden in his backpack, which were quickly discovered and taken away.
Model Amy Willerton, meanwhile, somehow managed to bring in a whole bag of make up and kept it hidden for 10 days before it was discovered, presumably when someone noticed her mascara’d eyelashes, and then removed from camp. And chef and presenter Gino D’Acampo brought in a pillow as his luxury item while failing to mention it was filled with items including seasoning, tea, and coffee sachets.
Health writer Gillian McKeith had food items she had hidden in her knickers that were also taken away, while Caitlyn Jenner and Ian Wright were punished by losing a star for their team after she shared some of her food with him when he wasn’t supposed to be eating.
