Actress Angela, 66, first graced our screens as the beloved Yolande two decades ago, capturing our hearts as the vivacious B&B owner and Patrick’s (Rudolph Walker) other half. Despite being a hit with fans, her character made a shock exit in 2008 and in 2017 briefly appeared for Patrick’s birthday, reports Daily Star.

Tribute to late sister on soap

Angela shared a heartfelt revelation about the inspiration behind her EastEnders character Yolande and it’s none other than her real-life sister Merlene, who sadly passed away. Paying tribute to her beloved sister, Angela disclosed that Yolande’s endearing qualities were modelled after Merlene. “Yolande is based on my own late sister,” she said.

Describing Yolande, Angela expressed: “She’s bubbly and positive, and she won Patrick over with her charm and her toughness. She’s vulnerable, but she’s principled.” In another chat, Angela expressed her desire to pay tribute to her sister through her acting. “I wanted to honour my sister in some way,” she shared.

Drawing parallels between her sister and her character, Angela pointed out: “Yolande’s vulnerability and principled nature were inspired by Merlene’s own qualities.”
