Inside Lock & Quay as new pub with ‘best views ever’ opens in old Gateshead police station

A pub which claims to boast ‘the best views’ of the River Tyne and its bridges is now open in Gateshead, with the Lock & Quay taking over a building that used to be a police station.

Turn back the clock 20 years and the Quayside was one of THE place for a night out in town; with The Boat still very much in town and Baja Beach Club and its neighbour Buffalo Joes still packed out most weekends; as people also flocked to the likes of Chase, Casa and Sea over the other side of the Swing Bridge.

Most recently, the Gateshead side of the Tyne got a big boost with the success of outdoor food and drink hotspot By The River Brew, just a stone’s throw away from the acclaimed River Beat restaurant. and it’s River Beat, which many years ago was also a police station. that has now become Lock & Quay, with its owners Jake Shephard and Graham Soult, aiming to give people ‘a traditional, community pub,’ with competitive food and drink prices, and a welcoming atmosphere.

Since opening right at the end of last year, the brilliantly named Lock & Quay has also proved popular with workers at Pipewellgate, with the offices that stand in the the same place that many Baja revellers danced the night away in the 00s.

On what he and Graham want to bring to the table with Lock & Quay, Jake told ChronicleLive: “We want the place to have a traditional pub feel; a place where people can come for food, drinks and not have their eyes gauged out, Things are hard enough at the moment without having to pay £8 or £9 for a pint.”

With a mission for the Lock & Quay to be good value for money, none of the draught beers on sale at the pub are currently more than £6, with a 2 for £12 cocktail offer on every day of the week, takeaway coffees, delicious looking Sunday dinners and pub food like burgers and chicken wings on the menu.

Jake added: “We want to keep it nice and relaxed; not one of those places that people might feel a bit intimidated to walk in. I’ve been in hospitality for a long time and have no pretences at all.”

Lock & Quay, which is offering free private hire, is currently open six days a week, until 10pm Tuesday-Thursday, 11pm on Fridays and 9pm on Sundays. Check out our first look pictures below.
