Inside the life of Garden Rescue’s Charlie Dimmock including family tragedy

Since rising to fame back in 1997 when she joined the cast of BBC’s Ground Force, Charlie Dimmock’s career has gone from strength to strength. During her time in the spotlight, the 57 year old has appeared on shows including The Joy of Gardening and Charlie’s Garden Army and she’s become a familiar face on the small screen thanks to her gardening expertise.

More recently, viewers may know Charlie thanks to her role on BBC show Garden Rescue. Having launched in 2016, the show is back for another series as Charlie joins a team of other designers as they give people’s gardens a much-desired makeover.

So, as she returns to our screens, let’s take a peek inside the TV personality’s life…

Between 1997 and 2005, Charlie appeared on Ground Force alongside Alan Titchmarsh and Tommy Walsh where the trio made over the gardens of individuals who’d been nominated by friends or family.

Following Ground Force, the TV presenter hosted River Walks for Meridian in the mid-noughties and in 2010 she had a role in the touring production Calendar Girls.

In 2016 she opened up to the Radio Times about what she’d been up to away from the world of TV. “I had been on TV a very long time, but I had always been doing other things. Ground Force ran its course. It was of its time. It was good fun, very enjoyable, and it had its run,” she said.

She added: “I’ve been busy. At the end of the day I do have a real job. I’m a gardener. I do garden design. I’ve been doing a lot of work with dementia homes, at flower shows, giving demonstrations, working on cruises. I’ve been pootling around doing quite a lot of things.”

Away from her career, Charlie was previously in a relationship with viticulturist John Mushet, though the pair went their separate ways in 2001.

Meanwhile, in 2014 the gardening expert opened up about being single and claimed that she was “too old for marriage”.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, she said: “I’m quite happy as I am with my cat, my dog and my horse. They’re all the company I need. I think that if I did meet someone I’d prefer a partnership to marriage. That’s terrible isn’t it? Very selfish, that’s what they say, isn’t it? But I like being able to do what I want.”

In 2004, tragedy struck Charlie when her mum and stepfather sadly died in the Boxing Day tsunami while they were on holiday in Thailand.

In 2011, Charlie briefly opened up about her loss and she revealed her love of cooking. “I’m never happier than when I’m in my kitchen – I love cooking, and my books have all the answers,” she told the Daily Mail.

“My gran, my dad Terry and my mum Sue were all good cooks, but sadly Mum and Dad split when I was 17. They both remarried, then tragically I lost my mum and stepfather in Thailand in the 2004 tsunami.”
