Inside the lives of Netflix’s Bridgerton stars – from ‘romance’ rumours to mental health crisis

After two years of waiting, Bridgerton’s third chapter is finally here. Released on Netflix on Thursday, 16 May, the series sees Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) and Penelope Featherington’s (Nicola Coughlan) romance take the centre stage and, even better, it’s released in two parts, meaning there’s twice the opportunity to watch their love story play out.

But since its first release in 2020, Bridgerton has seen some famous faces take to the screen, including Regé-Jean Page and Phoebe Dynevor. So, to celebrate the new season, let’s take a look at some of the stars’ lives away from the hit Netflix drama…

‘Romance’ rumours

With their characters’ love story playing out on screen, Luke and Nicola have been hit by rumours regarding their own relationship. However, Nicola has addressed the speculation and called it “really sweet” and she paid tribute to her friend.

Speaking to Extra, the former Derry Girls actress said: “We think it’s really sweet, I think because we truly love each other. He is a really special person in my life, and I got to do this experience with him.

“I’ll never get to do something like this again, on this scale… It’s so nice having such a lovely friend that I can do all this with.”

Mental health struggles

Ruby Barker

Over the years, Ruby Barker, who played Marina Thompson on the show, has opened up about her mental health. In 2022, she shared a video on Instagram where she explained that she’d been “struggling” and urged fans to be kinder when it came to their own mental health.

“I just want to be honest with everybody, I have been struggling. So, I’m in the hospital at the minute, I’m going to get discharged soon and hopefully get to continue with my life and I’m going to take a little bit of a break from myself,” she said.

She added: “I want to encourage others, if you are struggling, please do yourself a favour. Take a break, stop being so hard on yourself. And people used to always tell me not to be so hard on myself, and I never really, really knew what that meant.”

Shock exit

Rege-Jean Page

After his love story with Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) played out in season one, Regé-Jean Page, who played Duke Simon Basset, shocked fans when he quit the show. Addressing his choice to leave the show, Regé-Jean said in an Instagram post that the show had been “the ride of a life time” and said it was “an absolute pleasure and a privilege”.

Meanwhile, in a 2023 interview with Vanity Fair the actor shared further insight about his decision. “I signed up to do a job and I did the job and then I did some other jobs,” he said. “That’s it. That’s the story. I wish it was more glamorous than that.”

She may no longer be on our screens in Bridgerton, but Phoebe Dynevor’s recent engagement to beau Cameron Fuller has got us all talking. The actress revealed the happy news when she attended the Met Gala earlier this year while sporting a stunning diamond ring.

The pair have kept their relationship relatively low-key, though first sparked romance rumours last year and have since attended events including Wimbledon 2023 together.
