J. Cole Releases Debut Mixtape ‘The Come Up’ on Streaming Services

J. Cole’s debut project, The Come Up, is now out on major streaming services.

J. Cole’s first project was originally released in 2007, and he self-produced 12 out of the 21 tracks. It features early Cole fan favorites like “Simba,” “Dollar and a Dream,” and “School Daze.” In addition to original songs, the project also borrowed popular beats from Kanye West, Nas, and Jay-Z.

The commercial release of The Come Up also coincides with the launch of his new audio series Inevitable. The first episode about The Come Up is out now.

Inevitable is hosted by J. Cole and his manager Ibrahim ‘Ib’ Hamad, as well as their frequent collaborator Scott Lazer. In a synopsis about what the series will cover, it’s described as a “raw and reflective limited audio series” that will provide “an unfiltered voyage through [J. Cole’s] life, career, and personal evolution.”

In addition to conversations about his music, the series will also feature previously unreleased tracks and Cole covering “his journey from his early days as a young, aspiring rapper to finally seeing his dreams become a reality, despite the many hurdles and pitfalls he faces along the way.”

Cole shared his thoughts about the series when he dropped the trailer for it on social media. “It’s hard to write a caption to describe what this is,” Cole wrote. “I really don’t know what to call it. We settled on calling it an ‘audio series’ but to me it plays like a movie in the form of a conversation.”

“First, me and Ib spent mad days talking to Scott, recapping the whole journey up to present day,” Cole continued. “Front to back. It was new, it was fun, it was emotional and more than anything, it was therapeutic.”

Cole also explained that he realized how important it was to share his stories with fans after Scott Lazer edited together their conversations. “I got so much clarity from it, and I understood more than ever the power of having a dream, the power of fueling that dream with strong vision, the magic that happens when we stay in alignment with God, and the darkness that can come in the times that we don’t,” Cole explained. “So, if you rocked with me at any point so far on my journey, I hope this will give you even more perspective and fill in a lot of blanks.”
