J.K. Rowling directly responded to Azealia Banks after implying there are personal motivations behind her anti-trans views.
The exchange began when a post by X user Imtiaz Mahmood recounted Rowling’s hardships before achieving fame with the Harry Potter series, including an abusive marriage at age 27.
The 33-year-old rapper quote-tweeted the post, writing, “Maybe her husband at 27 cheated on her with a Tr***ylicious diva and that’s why she’s dedicated every waking moment to making sure her life’s legacy is dedicated to harassing people who make up less than 1% of the global population.”
“It’s a matter of public record that my first husband beat me up, but you got the likes, Azealia, and I hope they were worth it,” Rowling, 59, wrote back, referring to her ex-husband, Jorge Arantes, whom she wed in 1992 and divorced three years later.
Banks later reacted to a PopBase tweet reporting on her comments and said she was frustrated with the attention and claimed to have been stuck in a “matrix” of people “obsessed with other adult’s private parts.”
“everybody hating on everyone the country getting taken over pedophilia like wide in the open everyone on ozempic rap is dead like stoooooooop with the stupid bot algorithm media shiiiiit now. This is not news !!!! N this shit is annoying as fuck,” she wrote on Monday.
When a user pointed out that Rowling had responded mildly to avoid provoking her, Banks replied, “I haven’t seen it and I don’t care lol I’ve had her blocked for mad long n she keeps popping up fucking obsessed about what’s truly looking like a psychiatric problem like everrrrrry dayyyyy?? The dolls need a restraining order against her. She’s a fucking lunatic.”
Banks went on to reiterate that Rowling’s fixation on trans issues was personal before questioning, “What if the gag is JK really a man. What if this bitch really had a dick the whole time.”
Elsewhere in her tweeting spree, the Broke With Expensive Taste rapper likened the Harry Potter author to the artist formerly known as Kanye West and suggesting they are “possessed” and “mounted by a demon.”
“I been had likes fuck is u saying sis. Im AZEALIA BANKS. THE AZEALIA BANKS. Know what time it is n don’t play yourself old bitch this is MY internet you’re on,” she wrote in response to Rowling.
“Imagine thinking being reminded that we heard you and no one fucking cares is for likes, wow jk Rowling is a hood rat,” she added.
Rowling is a long-time critic of the transgender community. She has defended her stance ad nauseam with lengthy essays and once said she would be willing to serve time in prison over her views.
Banks has also been criticized for making transphobic remarks of her own, including a 2021 tweeting spree where she said, “getting castrated doesn’t automatically make them a female.”
