Newcastle United skipper Jamaal Lascelles is on course to play again this season after revealing the extent of his injury woe.
The club captain will miss the Carabao Cup final and the rest of the March programme but is keeping an open mind on his comeback date. Lascelles suffered an ACL issue last March against West Ham in the dramatic 4-3 victory over the Hammers but went under the knife straight after.
Speaking to the club’s matchday magazine, Lascelles said: “I definitely feel like I’m getting on the right track in my recovery from an ACL injury. I’ve had a couple of little setbacks – nothing to do with the knee, just low-level muscle injuries which can happen when you spend such a long period of time away from the grass and your body adapts to the increasing load.
“But physically and mentally, I’m in a great place and I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.”
It remains to be seen whether Lascelles will be fit for the club’s April programme but with Sven Botman out for the rest of the season, Newcastle could do with the ex-Nottingham Forest man’s experience. Howe does not want to put pressure on Lascelles but said: “We’re probably looking towards the end of the season as a return date for him.”
Speaking about Lascelles’ presence behind the scenes, Howe said: “He drives the standards every day in training and has been the ultimate professional. If the lads have a problem they go to Jamaal.”
