Joey Barton has reignited his spat with Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer, branding him “a liar” and “a snake” regarding their shared period at Newcastle during the 2008-09 term. The discord between Barton and Shearer arose when Shearer stepped in as the Magpies’ manager toward that season’s end.
A ravaging 3-0 defeat to Liverpool, which included Barton’s dismissal, led to an alleged fiery exchange in the dressing room as pressure mounted amid a battle to avoid relegation from the Premier League.
Subsequently, Newcastle announced that Barton was indefinitely suspended after his red card and supposed squabble with Shearer , who later allowed the player’s return before the club descended into relegation. In a recent discussion, Shearer disclosed an incident where Barton supposedly requested his approval to go to London for Everton’s FA Cup semi-final game at Wembley.
Contrarily, Barton has refuted this on his Common Sense podcast, asserting that he didn’t beg for permissions since he was injured and Everton weren’t playing that weekend.
Enunciating his thoughts, Barton penned the words: “Shearer was a liar and a snake. If Newcastle didn’t appoint him, I believe that group would have survived. Don’t be telling porkies Mary Poppins.”, reports the Mirror.
He continued in the broadcast: “[Shearer] could bore a glass eye to sleep him! Most boring man ever and he’s been telling lies! He’s been lying about what happened in the dressing room at Anfield.”
Barton has launched a scathing attack on Shearer, accusing the Newcastle legend of trying to manipulate the narrative. “He’s either got confused because he’s headed (too much) or he’s trying to fit the narrative,” said Barton.
“He said I’d asked him to go to the semi-final. I didn’t ask him to go! I just went. We weren’t playing that weekend and I was injured. He’s obviously got wind of that, which I didn’t know about, and he’s added that to his story.”
Barton also alleged that Shearer had criticised his teammates during his stint as manager, saying: “He conveniently missed out that he was coming in as our manager, when I was in the treatment room and in the gym, and saying: ‘The other players were s***. Come on, I need you back! ‘ So straight away I was like, you’re a f***ing snake you.”
In a further tirade on Twitter, Barton referred to Shearer as “a baldy nugget” and challenged him to respond: “I actually hope the baldy, nugget chirps up @alanshearer. What I know about him and his BBC cronies, he best keep his nut right down. Back under your stone with the other toad @GaryLineker.”
This is not the first time Barton has clashed with Shearer and Lineker. The feud dates back to 2012 when Shearer condemned Barton’s actions after he was sent off for QPR against Manchester City for elbowing Carlos Tevez.
Barton hit back online, saying: “Shearer’s still on my case… I know I f***ed up Alan, thanks for stating the obvious. Whilst were both stating the obvious about each other, can I just say for the record what a great player u were. Well better me… But I have a better hair (which is not hard), wear well better shirts on TV and have a personality(something u lack). P.S. My final point, ur a s*** pundit/manager.”
