Kate Garraway reveals she inspired unlikely movie icon – ‘So much of my life has echoed her’

Good Morning Britain’s Kate Garraway has opened up about meeting Bridget Jones star Renée Zellweger on the ITV breakfast show – and why she’s so similar to the iconic film character.

The TV presenter is celebrating Good Morning Britain’s 10th anniversary with the rest of the ITV team as they host a special show to mark the special birthday. Speaking about her favourite moments from the last decade on the show, Kate said that it was an honour to meet Renée on the sequel’s set in 2016.

“On the third Bridget Jones movie, she came into the gallery to watch how our show is put together and even used some of our studio crew in the filming,” Kate said.

“Then I went onto the set of Bridget’s bedroom and she said, ‘Welcome to your home.’ So much of my life seems to have echoed the character Bridget Jones’ adventures!”

With Bridget Jones’s Baby following Bridget as she worked as a TV producer on the fictional current affairs show Hard News, GMB played a large role in shaping the film – with Renee visiting ITV to learn how breakfast TV worked. The show’s former director, Erron Gordon, took on a small role in the film, playing the director of Hard News.

Opening up about other unforgettable moments, Kate said there are few as memorable as her coverage of Queen Elizabeth II’s death in 2022. “It was such an honour to be part of it, a real sense of history,” she said. “Being there as a commentator at Buckingham Palace in the days after her passing and then again throughout the funeral day itself.”

Meanwhile, co-star Susanna Reid looked back on her very first show on Good Morning Britain. “I was sitting next to the wonderful Ben Shephard, who just as the opening credits were rolling whispered, ‘You’ll never get a second chance to enjoy this moment because this is the only moment we’ll ever launch this programme to the nation,'” she said.

“You can be quite nervous when you’re presenting a new programme as there’s a lot of pressure, lots of responsibility and there is obviously lots of media attention. And when he said that, I just thought ‘You’re absolutely right!’ In that moment when the music’s running – yes, just enjoy it! So that’s such a memorable moment for me.”
