Kieran Trippier fitness scare played down as Newcastle United star heads to Dubai

Newcastle United chiefs have played down fears that Kieran Trippier’s season is over despite the England full-back being spotted flying out to Dubai.

The Toon vice-captain is travelling to the Middle East for some warm weather training and assessment on his calf injury but United expect him to still return in time for the run-in. Newcastle initially expected Trippier, spotted at Newcastle Airport heading for Dubai, back for the trip to Crystal Palace last week but they are taking things cautiously with the ex-Tottenham Hotspur man.

Eddie Howe had stated he hoped Trippier would be back “soon” when asked about his chances of a return for the Sheffield United game. Since then Trippier has said: “I’ve had a calf issue and at this stage of the season, and with the amount of games I’ve played we need to take extra precautions. It’s important that there are no setbacks – I don’t want to come back and then re-injure myself, so I’m just ticking every box.”

Trippier is battling to be fit for both club and country ahead of the European Championships in Germany this summer with England. He could also use the club’s trip to Australia to build up match fitness with two games Down Under.

The Magpies face four more Premier League games plus a two-match trip to Australia in post-season where they will face Tottenham Hotspur and the A-League All-stars. Trippier will hope to be fit for England’s home friendly clash against Bosnia & Herzegovina at St James’ Park and the warm-up encounter with Iceland at Wembley ahead of the European Championships.

Trippier has not featured since injuring his calf in the 3-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers at St James’ in February.
