Independent rapper Larry June recently attracted attention for a tweet he made in 2016 about being a Lyft driver, but now he’s clarified that he was never a driver for the ride-sharing service.
In a post dated Aug. 13, 2016, June shared a screenshot of what appeared to be his Lyft driver profile. “I love being a @lyft driver, thank you,” he wrote alongside the screenshot. “Good job @lyft.” The San Francisco rapper, who has been releasing projects since 2010, went viral for the old tweet, with some using the post to encourage artists who are hoping to get their big break.
However, June has since clarified that he was never actually a Lyft driver.
“I never actually did Lyft,” he wrote on Tuesday, Jan. 28. “But the moral of the story is… It’s ok to get a job. Keep going no matter what.” Someone responded to his post by pointing out he had multiple tweets about being a Lyft driver and asked what he meant by it. “I was trolling but also letting people know it’s ok to do Lyft,” he wrote. “They was making real chicken in 2016. We got to normalize working, especially in my community.”
Funnily enough, June spoke about the Lyft driver stuff in a clip he uploaded to his YouTube channel in December 2016, as seen below.
“I haven’t drove Lyft that many times, though, but I’m a Lyft driver,” he said, to which he was asked how many times he’s picked up passengers as a Lyft driver. “Twice,” he smiled, before immediately breaking. “Nah, I ain’t gonna lie, I ain’t drive yet but I’m really a Lyft driver, though. I’m really signed up to be a Lyft driver but I ain’t had time to do it yet.”
On Wednesday, June also confirmed that he’s got a collaborative album with 2 Chainz and The Alchemist scheduled to arrive on Feb. 7. The trio recently previewed the project with “Bad Choices,” while June teamed up with The Alchemist in 2013 for the critically acclaimed album, The Great Escape.
