Parts of the North East woke up to a light dusting of snow on Tuesday morning as temperatures dropped overnight.
The chilly conditions have been dubbed the “first taste of winter” by the Met Office. A new yellow weather warning of snow and ice in the North East – was issued by UK’s national weather and climate service, encompassing Tuesday evening, overnight and during Wednesday morning.
The areas affected will be Darlington, Durham, Gateshead, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Newcastle upon Tyne, North Tyneside, Northumberland, Redcar and Cleveland, South Tyneside, Stockton-on-Tees and Sunderland. However, the latest forecasts on the Met Office weather map show that the majority of the North East could be set to miss the snow overnight.
Neil Armstrong, chief meteorologist at the Met Office said: “With cold Arctic air firmly in place over the UK, continued winter hazards are likely through much of this week, with further updates to warnings likely in the coming days.”
Tuesday, November 19
8pm: Up to 4mm of snow in Berwick-upon-Tweed and the area south of the town.
8.15pm: More than 4mm of snow to the south and west of Berwick. Up to 4mm in other areas of North Northumberland.
8.30pm: More than 4mm of snow in some parts of Northumberland National Park. Up to 4mm in various parts of the county between Alnwick and Berwick.
8.45pm: Up to 4mm of snow in Northumberland National Park and around Wooler. Up to 0.5mm just north of Alnwick.
9pm: Up to 0.5mm in the areas around Morpeth and Rothbury.
10pm: Up to 4mm just south of Alnwick.
Wednesday, November 20
5am: Up to 0.5mm on the Northumberland Coast between Alnwick and Berwick.
6am: Up to 4mm between much of Alnwick and Wooler.
6:30am: Up to 4mm in the areas around Ashington and Morpeth.
