Kieran Trippier blasted his fellow defenders after switching off for Brighton & Hove Albion’s crucial equaliser in the FA Cup exit to the Seagulls at St James’ Park.

Another defensive inquest could be vital for United now ahead of the trip to West Ham with a whopping 13 goals conceded in just five games since getting past Arsenal to reach the Carabao Cup final with a clean sheet.

The Scouse star’s dismissal with seven minutes left was branded as stupidity by a host of fans in the aftermath of the FA Cup exit. His only defence will be that Jan Paul van Hecke had a hold of his shirt before his attempts to push him away. In the Press conference Howe, wary of a potential appeal, did not condemn his actions and insisted he had not tried to harm the Albion defender.
Howe said: “Knowing the player, I know there’s no malice intended there. Of course, we’ll reserve the right to put in an appeal. If we analyse the incident and feel there’s grounds for that, then we will do it without hesitation.”
