Lumo to put on extra train service to help Gateshead fans return from Isuzu FA Trophy Final

A train operator will put on an extra service to help Gateshead fans return from the Isuzu FA Trophy Final.

Gateshead Football Club will take on Solihull Moors FC at Wembley stadium in London at 4.15pm on May 11.

Fans heading to the game can book the 7:12am or 10:22am Lumo departures from Newcastle Central Station. They travel non-stop to London King’s Cross connecting into the tube to arrive well ahead of the kick-off.

Lumo, the official rail partner of Gateshead FC, has now announced details of an extra train service, which will help Heed Army fans return to Tyneside from the capital.

They have worked with industry partners at Network Rail to enable the additional departure from London King’s Cross at 8:26pm, which will see fans arrive back in Newcastle at 11:10pm.

To further support pre-match excitement on the day of the final, Lumo will be specially branding a train with ‘Heed Army Express’ designs across one of the operator’s all-electric trains.

Martijn Gilbert, Managing Director at Lumo, said: “As a locally based company, we’re proud to be playing our part in helping Gateshead fans make sure they can get to Wembley and back on the same day for the Trophy Final. We’ll be making sure it’s a memorable journey with our special ‘Head Army Express’ service helping the club’s many fans get there match fit.

“At Lumo, we’re wishing Gateshead FC every success for a win at Wembley. Putting on an extra train at short notice is no mean feat, but as an agile and entrepreneurial Open Access rail operator, and thanks to our work with Network Rail, we have ensured we’ve been able to achieve this important goal to support Gateshead fans.”

Single tickets start from £44.90 when booked fee-free on the Lumo website.

Bernard McWilliams, Gateshead FC Vice Chairman added: “Once again Gateshead FC are delighted to partner with Lumo during our Isuzu FA Trophy Cup Final appearance at Wembley, their support this year has been excellent, and we are proud to have them on board as a Club Partner.”

Gateshead FC fans protest outside Gateshead Civic Centre.

Earlier this week, devastated Gateshead FC fans hit out at the “sickening” decision to block the club from the National League play-offs.

The Heed has been denied the chance to compete for promotion to the English Football League (EFL) in the end-of-season contest amid a dispute over their lease at Gateshead International Stadium

News broke on Sunday that Rob Elliot’s team would be kicked out of the play-offs after being deemed ineligible for promotion as the club was unable to meet an EFL requirement to secure a 10-year lease on their ground, which is owned by Gateshead Council.

The council is in the process of seeking a new operator to take over the stadium in an effort to cut costs and, despite civic centre leaders insisting that they offered assurances that the club would be granted the 10-year lease if promoted, the uncertainty over the venue’s future has proved too great for the football authorities.

Dozens of Heed supporters staged a protest outside Gateshead Civic Centre on Monday afternoon, the night when their team should have been taking on Solihull Moors in the play-off semi-final.
