Luxury hotel in Northumberland with A-list guests chosen as venue for ‘crunch’ NUFC talks

It’s no stranger to a high profile guest or an important business meeting an a luxury hotel had both on Monday, when it was used for a ‘crunch’ Newcastle United summit, attended by many of the club’s top brass.

Tucked away in what has been described as one of the region’s most ‘charming’ villages and at the heart of a stunning estate, Matfen Hall is big on heritage, atmosphere and space, making it the ideal location for a plush getaway, a wedding,. or a spa day and, this week, after NUFC’s narrow 4-3 win against Nottingham Forest and amid all the speculation on the future of St James Park, it was the location for talks between important figures at the club, including chair Yasir Al-Rumayyan, who arrived on Tyneside on Sunday.

The likes of sporting director Paul Mitchell, CEO Darren Eales, Chief Commercial Officer Peter Silverstone and chief financial officer Simon Capper were all thought to have attended the meeting. As reported by ChronicleLive earlier this week, the meeting was set to be where the final presentation for Newcastle’s two options for either a new stadium just outside the city centre or a revamped St James’ Park would take place and be led by stadium chief Brad Miller.

What was said behind closed doors isn’t public knowledge, but one thing that has been confirmed is that will be put to the Newcastle United fan advisory board next month.

Ir’s been close to a decade now since a whole host of big names descended on Matfen Hall, with the likes of Holly Willoughby, Phillip Schofield, Dermot O’Leary and Stephen Mulhern staying there as they arrived in the North East to attend the wedding of Dec Donnelly to Ali Astell just outside Newcastle city centre.

At the start of last year, it was revealed that Matfen Hall’s directors had given the green light to plans for a new luxury spa, as part of a £40m revamp, with the news coming just months after it was named Best Countryside Hotel in the prestigious Condé Nast Johansens Awards for Excellence 2025.

Spread over 300 acres of picturesque parkland, the hotel exudes sophistication and quality, promising guests an unforgettable stay with five exquisite dining and drinking spaces and 63 bedrooms, ranging from Classic Rooms to Luxury Suites.
