A Spanish island is set to wave goodbye to UK holidaymakers as travel costs are predicted to skyrocket. A comprehensive 350-page sustainability pact, unveiled on Thursday, aims to manage tourism demand in Majorca and the Balearics sustainably.
President Prohens stated: “The current scenario based on the volume of visitors, overcrowding and intensive exploitation of resources will continue”. The plans propose restricting low-cost flights for UK tourists during peak seasons.
The long-term goal is to lessen reliance on traditional tourist markets, particularly Germany and the UK. The document reads: “A low-price strategy encourages mass tourism and generates infrastructure, housing and public services overload.”
On Thursday, Prohens emphasised the need to “abandon strategies based on high volumes and low prices”.

The document supports maintaining high prices to safeguard competitiveness. In response, a local Spaniard commented: “You can limit low cost flights and initiate a number of other measures to reduce certain types of tourists visiting, and by that I mean the ones who go for packages holidays but it looks as though officials in Mallorca simply plan to replace them with more affluent tourists from the US.”, reports Birmingham Live.
One individual expressed confusion, stating: “So I find it hard to understand if the true intentions of the government is (a) to reduce overall tourist numbers or (b) to maintain them but replace the lower end ones for more top shelf tourists from new markets like America. If it is option b, the result could be much more general inflation and unease among the local residents.”
A second critic responded angrily: “My God, the politicians talk some rubbish. A ridiculous idea on so many different levels. I can think of at least 100 EU laws that this would breach.”
A third commentator dismissed the idea, saying: “A day or so after TUI announced and collaboration with Ryan Air, they must be chuffed……not. It won’t happen.”
Another respondent highlighted the potential contradiction with EU values, remarking: “Not very “free movement of peoples” of them, is it? Are we done with diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well?”.
