Man arrested by armed police on Seaham seafront on suspicion of carrying knife

Armed police descended on Seaham in County Durham to arrest a man believed to be in possession of a knife.

Officers from Durham Constabulary were seen approaching a white car parked on the seafront, near the Tommy statue before opening the front passenger door and speaking to a man inside. The man then exited the vehicle via the rear left passenger door on the instruction of an officer, and was asked to turn around with his hands up before being handcuffed by police, a video taken by a bystander showed.

The man, wearing a black coat and jeans with a grey hoodie, was then escorted into a police car, with at least four armed police seen in attendance at Seaham seafront on Tuesday afternoon. Officers have since confirmed that the man, from the Cleveland area, was arrested on suspicion of carrying a knife.

A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary said: “Shortly before 1pm yesterday (Tuesday), police received reports of an armed man in a car parked near the Tommy statue in Seaham.

“Armed officers were deployed and, following a short police operation, a man in his 40s from the Cleveland area was safely arrested on suspicion of possessing a knife in a public place.”
