Man arrested in connection with two separate arson attacks in Newton Aycliffe

A man has been arrested and bailed after two alleged arson attacks in a County Durham town.

On Monday, March 3, Durham Constabulary were called to a fire at a bungalow in Beechfield, Newton Aycliffe. Fire crews extinguished the blaze, which also destroyed two cars.

No-one was injured in the incident, but the occupants of the property were shaken by the incident.

Shortly before 8pm on Wednesday, March 5, a house on Lilburne Crescent, also in Newton Aycliffe, was targeted. It is believed two men on a scooter approached the property before throwing a brick through the window, pouring petrol through it and setting it alight.

Again, the occupant of the property was unharmed but was left shaken by the incident. Durham Constabulary confirmed on Thursday, March 6, that the two incidents were connected, and a man has since been arrested on suspicion of arson.

A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary said: “A 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of arson on Saturday, March 8. He has since been bailed with conditions and enquiries continue to trace those responsible.”

For the incident on Lilburne Crescent, Anyone who has not already been spoken to or who might have any information is asked to call 101 quoting incident reference number 389 of March 5.
