A County Durham man has been charged with kidnap after a teenage girl was allegedly forced into a house.
Matthew Hindhaugh, of Newton Aycliffe, was also accused of assaulting the girl during the suspected incident in the town last week. Police were called to a street at around 10pm on Thursday, February 27, after reports the teen had been assaulted.
It is thought the suspected victim was then forced into a property before she managed to escape and run to a nearby address to raise the alarm. Hindhaugh, 22, was arrested later that night.
He was taken into police custody and interviewed by officers and has now been charged with kidnap, assault, possession of an offensive weapon and non-fatal strangulation.
He was due to appear at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court today.
Detective Chief Inspector Simon Turner, from Durham Constabulary, said: “This was an isolated incident but understandably very shocking and upsetting for the girl involved and her family. Specially trained officers are currently supporting the victim and ensuring she receives the help and support she needs.
“A man has been charged in connection with the incident, and I would like to reassure people that we are not looking for anyone else in connection with it.”
Anyone who believes they have any information which could help the investigation and has not yet spoken to police is asked to call Durham Constabulary on 101, quoting incident number 450 of February 27.
