Man left with head injury near Durham city centre after gang attacked him with wooden pole

A police investigation has been launched after a teenage gang attacked a man with a wooden pole.

Police are appealing for witnesses after the young man was attacked by a group on bikes as he made his way home after a night out. The victim, who is in his early 20s, was walking with a friend along Redhills Lane, Durham at around 2.30am on Saturday, December 7 when he was assaulted.

Police say he was confronted by a group of four or five young men, thought to be older teenagers, who were on bikes. The teenagers threatened the victim, then circled around on their bikes and hit him in the head with a wooden pole, leaving a three-inch cut to his forehead which required medical attention.

PC Maddie Blakelock, of Durham City CID, said: “This was a nasty and unprovoked attack on a man who has simply being enjoying a night out and anyone who can help us identify the people responsible should call us urgently”. Police are trying to trace those responsible and are appealing for witnesses to come forward if they saw or have footage of either the attack or a group of males on bikes in that area between 2am and 3am.

Anyone with information which could help the investigation should ring Durham Constabulary on 101. Quote incident 44 of December 7.
