Meek Mill is on a mission to curb youth incarceration.
On Thursday, the Philadelphia-born rapper returned to Instagram to highlight the undesirable conditions of prison life. But he didn’t address the issues of overcrowding, violence, or inadequate healthcare. He instead focused on the prison toilets.
“To all the young bulls in the street … if you don’t know how to communicate with a lawyer about law… if you don’t have family support ..if you don’t have money to fight case or eat… the law library gonna scare you if you can’t read good!” he wrote. “Imagine this being your toilet for the rest of your life … it’s rusty and it’s the same water you drink! If you got a chance to slide ‘leave that shit behind.’ SAVE YOUR SELF THEN TRY TO HELP YOUR PEOPLES! THESE TOILETS FOR ‘HEATHENS ONLY.’”
The post included a photo of Meek sitting inside a cell across from a “comby” unit, a stainless steel fixture that serves as a toilet, sink, and sometimes water fountain.
Meek became a prominent advocate for criminal justice reform after his 2018 arrest. The “Proud of Me” rapper received a two to five-year sentence for violating the terms of his probation on a decade-old case.
In 2019, Meek co-founded REFORM Alliance, a nonprofit organization that aims to fix the broken criminal justice system. The group has pushed to change parole and probation laws and co-signed policies that aim to reduce incarceration rates and recidivism.
On March 2, Meek posted a photo from a REFORM Alliance event in which he took the stage alongside fellow co-founders Jay-Z and Michael Rubin.
The rapper pointed to his casual attire, saying he preferred to wear hoodies to speaking engagements so the audience “can see me as a Black man from the streets!”
A number of users criticized Meek’s post, which referenced Trayvon Martin, an unarmed Black teen who was fatally shot in 2017.
“This n***a a special kind of slow,” one person responded.
Meek defended himself, saying he used his platform and material wealth to help his family and community.
“I have millions in my bank account … respected by the streets and the wealthy … with over 30 [million] raised to fight the system with reform,” he wrote. “All houses owned from my gmom and mom… and I look out for my community … let’s compare lives right here in front of the world lol.”
In other Meek news, the Grammy-nominated rapper recently called on fans for tax advice. Meek claimed he paid the IRS $2.8 million in taxes in 2013, about $800,000 more than he allegedly earned.
“How do I fight that?” he wrote on X. “I been paying my taxes since I was 23 years old … paying damn near 3 [million] out your account randomly is stressful!”
