The North East has been warned to expect blustery showers with hail and snow on Wednesday.
According to the Met Office, the region will get “frequent blustery showers”. And these showers “may be heavy at times with a risk of hail and snow on hills”.
It will feel cold, especially in the northerly breeze. And the maximum temperature will be 7C, the forecasters said. Snowfall has already been reported in Newcastle and in North Tyneside, including Whitley Bay.
Met Office weather maps show an orange band of hail heading towards the east coast and over Newcastle in the morning. At 9am, much of Tyneside and Wearside is predicted to see hail and rain, while parts of County Durham, including Stanhope and Middleton-in-Teesdale will get snow of up to 4mm/hour.
The hail and rain is then seen to diminish, with sporadic bursts during the day. However, it returns at 3pm, with a band of hail and rain growing across Newcastle and coastal areas.
From 4pm onwards, there are continuous blustery showers, with up to 4mm/hour of hail over Newcastle and the coast. At 6pm, alongside hail and rain, snow starts to return to County Durham, with a white band of up to 4mm/hour over the Stanhope and Middleton-in-Teesdale areas again.
The snow band moves away by 8pm however Newcastle and the coast continue to see hail and rain until at least 10pm. There are further showers seen overnight.
