Miguel Almiron’s Newcastle United transfer preference clear after lucrative offer snubbed

Miguel Almiron is prioritising a stay in Europe as speculation swirls over his future at Newcastle United. The winger is one of the few senior stars the Magpies could move out in January for profit and sustainability reasons – but the deal needs to be right for the player and the club.

Almiron was the subject of major speculation over the summer, with the Paraguayan international opting to stay put despite lucrative attempts to lure him to the Middle East.

“There was a specific offer from Saudi Arabia, but Miguel didn’t want to go, I always prioritise sporting matters,” his agent Daniel Campos told Paraguay’s La Union FM this week.

With January around the corner, interest is again beginning to build in the experienced Newcastle forward. Earlier this week it was reported Charlotte FC were in the driving seat for a move, with fellow MLS side Toronto FC keeping a close eye on the 30-year-old.

Meanwhile, there has been plenty of speculation that Almiron’s favourite club – Argentinian side River Plate – could make a play to lure him back to South America. However, Campos insists his client wants to stay in Europe as he enters the business end of his career.

“Newcastle changed the sporting direction of the club and there is no urgency to sell, if there are possibilities, we will see. He went through many cycles at the club and he is an idol,” Campos continued on La Union.

“Miguel knows that if there is something, we will listen to him. It was the same coach who kept him when there were proposals, Newcastle are asking a high value for him.

“Miguel wants to stay in Europe, he succeeded there, he has more than 230 games in the Premier League. Everyone wants to get there, he had the opportunity, and he knows how difficult it is.”
