In what promises to be a nostalgia-fest for fans, rock supergroup Mike and the Mechanics will be blasting back through their hits on a huge tour next year which includes two dates in the North East.
The band, first formed in 1985 by Genesis co-founder Mike Rutherford, have just announced a Looking Back – Living The Years 2025 Tour and it will see them back-track through decades of rock treats. In the crowd-pleaser shows, which will get under way next March, they will be “playing all the hits and drifting into Genesis” too they say.
The UK tour will take in The Glasshouse in Gateshead on March 22 but there will be an earlier stop-off in the region, at Globe Theatre in Stockton on March 8, and tickets will go on sale this week. The tour follows on from the success of last year’s sell-out Refuelled! Tour and Rutherford said: “It’s exciting to announce that we will be touring The Mechanics again.
“Getting back on the road with the guys last year was a real pleasure.” The rocker, who will be 74 when he hits the trail again, formed the band initially “as a side project to Genesis” and during the eighties and nineties, fronted by Paul Young and Paul Carrack, there were number one hits across the world.
After the sudden death of Young in 2000 the band released one further album then called it a day. But then in 2011 Mike revived the name, with new band members and they have stayed the course – although last year’s tour was their first in four years.
Mike recalls: “We slotted back into the old ways, the old jokes and the camaraderie like it had been a day! We had so much fun on the last tour, and the audiences were so gracious and warm, when we played the final show in Dusseldorf we all agreed then that we wanted to do it all again.”
This time around fans can expect to hear such hits as Over My Shoulder, The Living Years and All I Need Is A Miracle alongside some Genesis classics. Tickets for the tour will go on sale this Friday, May 3 on Ticketmaster as well as Ticketline: see the band’s website here and find the full March-April tour dates below.
