Jewison Bennette could be on his way out of Sunderland to Ukrainian outfit LNZ Cherkasy. The news emerges as the wide man’s future remains in limbo.
In the January window, it seemed the Costa Rican left winger was set for League One, with a loan move mooted and Charlton Athletic the suggested destination.
However, Bennette’s move fell through on deadline day as Charlton ran out of time to complete the necessary paperwork.
Now, though, Bennette is the subject of interest from Ukrainian side LNZ Cherkasy. That’s according to Costa Rican journalist Kevin Jimenez, who took to Twitter/X to say: “LNZ are interested in Jewison Bennette, negotiations are ongoing.”
Jimenez later added that this was a straight sale negotiation, rather than a loan bid. Details of any offer are not disclosed at this time, but it appears a permanent move to Ukraine would be the route forward.
With the Ukraine transfer window running from January 27 through to March 11, there is still plenty of time to get a deal over the line.
A move to the Ukraine Premier League is quite a different prospect to the idea of heading down to London and remaining in English football, but at this point, Bennette appears to have little choice.
It seems he has no future at the Stadium of Light, with plenty of players ahead of him in the Sunderland squad. Indeed, Le Bris opted to play players out of position rather than call on Bennette at times this season.
This could be exactly what Bennette needs at this stage of his career. The 20-year-old has talent and he will be hoping to make an impact in a new country.
Deadline day turned into a rather disappointing one for Sunderland, who’ve previously been very productive on the final day of the transfer window.
They signed Wilson Isidor in a permanent deal during the window but Liverpool loanee Jayden Danns – who was a late arrivals as the clock ticked down on deadline day – remains out injured for another month. Meanwhile, the other major winter signing, playmaker Enzo Le Fee, has picked up a hamstring injury.
