A new addition to the city’s dining scene is out to make a name for itself and already seems ahead of the game, having managed to attract some famous faces to a preview evening.
Dood restaurant opened on Newcastle Quayside on Tuesday – in the building formerly occupied by Chart House – but ahead of welcoming first customers it hosted a special preview evening earlier this month with some celebrity guests. Among them was Alan Shearer and the new restaurant certainly seemed on target with the Newcastle United legend-turned-football pundit who was pictured all smiles.
The restaurant by the team behind popular restaurants Dabbawal and nearby Khai Khai – which has had quite a list of big name diners of its own, including Hollywood star Harrison Ford and chef Gordon Ramsay – also welcomed Newcastle United players Fabian Schar, Matt Targett and Joe Willock among the night’s guests who had a first chance to sample what Dood describes as its ‘Persian-Levantine feasting culture’.
Owner Jaf Ali’s new venture draws from the culinary traditions of those areas and the cultures of the Silk Route. And the chef heading up the kitchen is Colin Clague who has worked in Michelin-star world-class restaurants and also led the opening of the luxury Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai.
Following Dood’s November 19 opening to the public, customers can now taste his new menu in a setting that complements the cuisine. The interior of the building – best remembered as Flynns to long-time quayside regulars – has been designed by London studio Run For The Hills and its decor, featuring both ancient and modern inspiration, aims to create a luxurious and evocative backdrop that reflects the nomadic heritage of the Silk Road.
Chef Clague, who was also involved with openings of the likes of Zuma Japanese restaurants in Dubai and London, said: “The history and culture of the Silk Road offer endless inspiration and at Dood we’re using the finest ingredients to create a menu that’s as exciting and varied as the regions it draws from.” For more about the menu, which captures the spirit of communal feasting with mezze dishes including Middle East-style grilled meats and plant-based options, see here.
