Newcastle 5 star ‘hidden gem’ restaurant takes top honour at the British Kebab Awards

There are celebrations for Vegano, a restaurant championed as one of Newcastle’s ‘best hidden gems’ after it took home one of the top accolades of the night at this year’s British Kebab Awards.

The awards, held in conjunction with Just Eat, are described as a ‘chance to recognise and champion the efforts of local kebab takeaways and restaurants across the nation’, with organisers keen to champion some of the industry’s often unsung heroes as they add: “As a nation we’re proud of our locals; we love to think our town lays claim to the best kebab. This is how much Britain loves Kebab takeaway and restaurants. This is how proud we are that they’re part of the fabric of our diverse communities.

“We’re rewarding the dedication of local kebab takeaway and restaurant owners across the country, recognising their contribution to our economy on a truly national scale. We’re saying thank you to the unsung heroes, the hardworking people behind the great little kebab takeaway and restaurant places. What’s more, we are giving people the chance to say definitively that they have the best kebab restaurant.”

The finalists for this year”s awards, held at the plush Park Plaza Westminster Hotel in London, were revealed at the end of last year, with three Tyneside businesses in the running. Turknaz, the Whitley Bay favourite featured in Vera, made the shortlist for Best Kebab Restaurant Regional, with hugely popular Gosforth haunt The Bake One up for Best Lebanese and Vegano, which was among the contender for Best Vegan Kebab Restaurant.

And it did more than just make the shortlist, with the restaurant in Blandford Street, Newcastle city centre, beating off it rivals to take home the trophy at the ceremony, which was also attended by a few famous faces.

A look at the 5 star reviews for Vegano on Trip Advisor and it’s easy to see why it emerged victorious. One very satisfied customers said they were left ‘speechless’ by how good their food was, as they enthuse: “i would give 100 stars if i could” Also awarding 5/5, another diner writes: “Best food for vegans in Newcastle!”

Delighted by how this year’s event went, Ibrahim Dogus, founder of the British Kebab Awards, said: “The winners of the 2025 British Kebab Awards show the strength of the industry, with great restaurants, vans and takeaways in every corner of the nation. Chefs are constantly reinventing and refining the classic kebab, meaning there’s something new from each one of this year’s worthy winners.”

He added: “This year’s winners represent everything that makes the British kebab industry special – diversity, quality, tradition, and innovation, and we’re proud to be highlighting the leaders in this great industry.”
