Newcastle bar forced to close during Restaurant Week as burst pipe floods whole venue

Popular Newcastle bar Motel Mexicana has been forced to close its doors during what should have been one of its busiest spells of the year, Restaurant Week, after a burst pipe flooded the whole venue.

As soon as it opened last spring, to the sounds of the mariachi band from the famous Doritos advert, the Mosley Street haunt became a huge hit with both locals and visitors to Newcastle city centre; thanks to its top notch cocktails, deals like Taco Tuesday and its much buzzed about bottomless brunches, which had loads of people flocking for margarita madness every Saturday afternoon.

After a busy Christmas period, Motel Mexicana was hoping to hit the ground running in 2025 by taking part in Restaurant Week, however its plans to be open to customers for all of this month’s event have been thwarted in a devastating way, with a post on the bar’s Instagram story on Tuesday night revealing that it remained close after the burst pipe caused chaos inside.

The social media statement read: “We are devastated to say that we have had a burst pipe on the top floor which has flooded the entire venue. Our team have worked tirelessly for the last 48 hours to do a clean up operation but unfortunately we are unable to open tonight.”

Giving an indication on when Motel Mexica could be back in business, the post continued: “We’re hoping to re-open tomorrow (Wednesday) or Thursday. We’re absolutely gutted because Restaurant Week means so much to independent venues like ourselves.”

Finally, outlining what the disruption means for people booked in for the Restaurant Week deal, the statement ended: “We will be contacting more bookings when we know more about the situation tomorrow morning. Thank you for being patient with us.”

Motel Mexicana had some very tasty deals lined up for Restaurant Week, with diners able to choose from £15, £20 and £25 deals, giving them tacos, loaded nachos and the option of added churros to tuck into.
