Newcastle bar is named among UK’s best cocktail bars – again

City cocktail favourite Mother Mercy has another success to add to the mix with a new rating as one of the best cocktail bars in the UK.

The basement bar in Newcastle‘s Cloth Market, which is renowned for its award-winning cocktails, has been included in a new list of top drinking spots. Is is the only venue in the North East to be singled out in a round-up of the 18 of the ‘Best Cocktail Bars in the UK’, according to The Times.

In the listing, alongside an article about ‘how Britain became the world’s cocktail capital’, Mother Mercy’s “cosy surroundings and creative cocktails” came in for special mention. It takes its place in the list of 18 best cocktail bars to visit alongside venues in London; Leeds; Birmingham; Margate; Leeds; West Midlands; Cotswolds; Cardiff; Edinburgh; Glasgow; Sheffield, Brighton, Manchester and Bristol.

The listing follows on from news that Luke Riley, who runs the venue, was shortlisted as one of the UK’s top 100 bar tenders in a global competition. Mother Mercy, which opened new bar Cafe Mercy in Grey Street last year and also has pop-ups inside Fenwick and at the By The River Brew riverside site in Gateshead, has already made a national name for itself, with successes including another top listing as one of the Top 50 Cocktail Bars in the UK.
