Newcastle city centre has welcomed an array of new shops and restaurants in 2024, including a mix of independent businesses and big brands.

The much-anticipated arrival of US beauty brand Sephora was just one of the exciting arrivals in the city in 2024. When the store opened in Eldon Square and the Metrocentre in September, hundreds of people queued outside for hours in the hope of grabbing a goodie bag and being among the first to browse the store.

There was also excitement over the opening of local sports store The Back Page in the shopping centre in July. Established by local football lover, Mick Edmondson, in 2003 The Back Page has been a vital part of the Newcastle community for nearly 21 years, opening its first shop on St Andrews Street near China Town in 2003.

And there was a lot to celebrate on the city’s food scene, with restaurants, fast food and street food venues specialising in a wide variety of cuisines opening in 2024, including Sri Lankan, Japanese, Indian, Mexican and American.

Another highly-anticipated arrival in 2024 was the opening of the St James’ STACK fanzone in August. The container village, which has 11 food vendors serving over two floors, attracted 38,000 visitors in the first four days of its opening.
