Newcastle fashion store set to close its doors in Eldon Square with loss of jobs

A popular Newcastle fashion firm is set to close its doors in Eldon Square after trading in the city for just six years.

Monki launched its store in the shopping complex in 2018, after moving in to the former Disney store in St Andrew’s Way, creating a number of jobs.

Now the clothing brand, which is part of the H&M Group, has confirmed that the Monki brand is being absorbed into another brand within the group, called Weekday. The move means the shop, which sells clothes “mixing Scandi cool with the energy of Asian street style”, will close in Newcastle on January 2. The company has not confirmed how many jobs will be lost.

The news comes two weeks after it emerged the Newcastle store was at risk of closure.

A spokesman for the group said: “Weekday is evolving into the ultimate youth destination for style and creative expression. Weekday’s vision is to create a unique experience for the creative generation by offering a culturally relevant curation of brands through one evolving world.

“The next planned step toward this vision, is the integration of Monki into the Weekday platform in 2025, both online and in stores. Monki’s distinct brand experience will be integrated into weekday.com, where it will complement the Weekday offering, focusing on where we create the best value for our customer.

“A limited number of Monki stores are intended to be transformed into multi-brand Weekday destinations, while the others are intended to be closed. The Monki brand will remain and be sold on weekday.com, selected retailers, and in Weekday multi-brand stores.

“We can confirm that the Monki store at Eldon Square in Newcastle upon Tyne will close on January 2nd 2025. Our colleagues have been made aware of this decision and while the closure of a store will always have an impact on our community, our priority is to support our colleagues and find the best solution possible for them.”
