Eddie Howe has called on his Newcastle United players to ‘do everything they can’ to finish the season strongly ahead of a ‘hugely important’ summer window.
Howe has a ‘clear vision’ of what he wants – namely signings that can ‘transport us forward’ – but this looks set to be another period of evolution rather than revolution on Tyneside. The fact remains that the majority of these players helped take Newcastle from relegation trouble to the Champions League in the space of just 18 months and these individuals have kept the club in the mix for Europe this season despite the squad being decimated by injury.
Newcastle would also face a real headache to try and replace a host of players at once given the cost of bringing in several quality replacements in a single window while still complying with financial rules. However, that is not to say there is just a place in the Europa League or Europa Conference League at stake in the run-in given how Howe is making assessments every day and the Newcastle boss did not hide his displeasure following Wednesday night’s 2-0 defeat at Crystal Palace.

So how important are these final weeks of the campaign for some of these players to prove that they can continue to play their part ahead of what Howe termed a ‘hugely important’ window?
“That’s my mindset,” Howe told reporters before the visit of Sheffield United. “Every training session is important. Today [Friday] is important even though it will be a light training session in the build-up to the game. Tomorrow [Saturday] is absolutely vital because you’re putting on the Newcastle shirt and representing the team in front of our own supporters.
“We have to do everything we can to give the best performances possible. That’s the standard every time you represent this football club so that’s what I’ll be asking the players to do.”
