Newcastle United and England legend Alan Shearer has returned to our screens once more as he joined the BBC’s FA Cup coverage team.
This weekend, he provided expert analysis on Manchester City’s clash with League Two contenders Salford City and Arsenal’s tie with Manchester United. Since hanging up his boots in 2006, the Premier League’s all-time top scorer has earned a reputation as an esteemed pundit and often lends his voice to commentaries.
Off the pitch, 54-year-old Shearer, whose net worth is estimated at £40million due in part to his significant BBC salary and roles with Amazon and Al-Jazeera, takes pride in his family life. The former Blackburn Rovers and Southampton forward and Lainya, his wife of nearly 34 years whom he met while at Southampton, have lived out their long marriage largely away from the public eye.
While Lainya keeps out of the spotlight, Shearer has shared a few light-hearted stories involving her, recalling one particularly memorable moment during a conversation on ‘The Rest is Football’ podcast. Reminiscing about his 1992 transfer to Blackburn, he candidly recounted Lainya’s reaction, eight months into her pregnancy: “When she was eight months pregnant… she looked at me in the car and said, ‘What the f*** have you done?’.”
Shearer also has three other children: Will, 24, and daughters Chloe, 31, and Hollie, 29, who all have a significant social media presence. Will has 16,000 Instagram followers, Chloe has nearly 20,000, and Hollie has a massive 82,000 followers.
Hollie is a pop singer with a top song on Spotify that has been streamed around 1.5 million times. She is also popular on TikTok, where she shares fashion and lifestyle content and has almost 335,000 followers.
Chloe works in talent management and recently worked on Soccer Aid. Interestingly, both sisters are in relationships with rugby players.
Hollie got engaged to England international Joe Marchant in November. The 28-year-old, who currently plays for Stade Francais, proposed in Paris, and Hollie showed off her large diamond ring in front of the Eiffel Tower.
The couple confirmed their relationship in April 2022 and moved in together in Paris last year. Since they started dating, Shearer said his daughter has become more interested in rugby than football.
The former Newcastle star joked that he’s “just glad it’s not a footballer” and expressed his happiness with his daughter’s partner choice. On the other hand, Chloe is currently in a relationship with former scrum-half Micky Young.
The 35-year-old had two stints at Newcastle Falcons before leaving the North East club last year to spend his final year at Gloucester. In August, it was announced by Newcastle that Young would be honoured with a testimonial year, featuring a football dinner event with none other than Shearer himself.
