Newcastle make Anthony Gordon red card appeal decision ahead of Liverpool Carabao Cup final

Newcastle United will not appeal Anthony Gordon’s red card against Brighton & Hove Albion, meaning he will miss their next three matches, including the Carabao Cup final.

Gordon, 24, was sent off in the 83rd minute of Newcastle’s FA Cup exit at home to Brighton on Sunday. He was penalised for a push on the back of Jan Paul van Hecke’s head and referee Anthony Taylor was in doubt but to brandish the red card to the England international.

VAR took a closer look at the incident but agreed with Taylor’s initial decision and Gordon was shown his marching orders. At that point, Newcastle fans around St James’ Park were shell-shocked and realised that Gordon’s dismissal would rule him out for the cup final against Liverpool later this month.

Eddie Howe hinted in his post-match press conference that Newcastle might decide to appeal, however, as they try and give Gordon the best chance of being available for the clash with Arne Slot’s Reds.

But Sky Sports have now reported that the Magpies have decided not to appeal against Gordon’s red card. It means the former Everton winger will now miss the next three matches in all competitions, starting with Monday’s trip to West Ham United in the Premier League.

He will then be ruled out of the Carabao Cup final on Sunday, March 16, before sitting out of the Magpies’ home game against Brentford on Wednesday, March 2.

Gordon’s first game back after suspension comes when they make the trip to Leicester City on Friday, April 7 – a fixture that is not for another five weeks’ time.

Speaking after Gordon was sent off against Brighton, Howe said in a pre-match press conference: “I don’t know quite what’s happened. It’s very difficult to form an opinion.

“I haven’t seen a replay. But my original thought was it looked harsh.

“I’m sure his intention wasn’t to harm anyone. I’ve only seen Anthony briefly and he was very disappointed. I don’t think he’s gone in with any malice or intention to do harm. I’ve got to see it properly before giving a big opinion. But that’s not a common sight with Anthony.

“It’s very disappointing for Anthony and the team but the old cliche is that one person’s disappointment creates a big opportunity for someone else.”
