She’s just been confirmed as the new host of Masterchef, to replace disgraced star Gregg Wallace and Grace Dent, in her role as a noted food critic, gave a form seal of approval to a restaurant in Newcastle that is no stranger to a famous customer, having welcomed everyone from A-list movie stars to football legends.
After a lot of speculation that she was going to be the person who got the coveted BBC job, it was officially announced on Wednesday morning that regular Masterchef guest, Guardian writer and former I’m A Celebrity contestant Grace would be joining John Torode to be at the helm of the new series of Celebrity Masterchef, after Gregg walked away from the role, following allegations of sexual and inappropriate comments to staff and contestants.
On getting the call to join John on Celebrity Masterchef, Grace commented: “I’m so excited that I can’t eat, which is severely detrimental to a restaurant critic,” and, speaking of her primary job as a food critic, last year, the Carlisle born star paid a visit to Khai Khai on Newcastle Quayside, having seen it being championed by chef Gordon Ramsay for serving him ‘the best curry of his life’ and visited by stars like film legend Harrison Ford, who headed there during a break in filming for the latest Indiana Jones film.
At the start of her review of Khai Khai for The Guardian, Grace declared that it had been on her on her ‘list of places to go for more than 18 months’ before she finally headed there, adding that people had kept telling her about it and saying just how good it was.
And Grace definitely agreed, with her describing the Old Delhi Butter Chicken, the dish Gordon waxed lyrical on, as “a piquant, herby, smoky slick of greatness,” having started her visit with the murgh tikka, which she described as “the kind of food you pause halfway through eating so you can text friends about it.”
As well as attracting Gordon Ramsey, Harrison Ford and Grace Dent, Khai Khai has also had Newcastle United stars past and present flocking, including Alan Shearer, Anthony Gordon and Tino Livramento, as well as Heart Radio presenter and Britain’s Got Talent judge Amanda Holden.
