Leisure group Loungers is set to expand even further in the North East, with plans for a new bar and restaurant in a Newcastle suburb.
The company – well known for creating ‘home from home’ cafe bars across the UK – has seen rapid expansion within the region, having only arrived in the area in 2023. The West Country cafe bar group has been growing at a rapid rate since its launch by three friends back in 2002, operating under its two brands Cosy Club and Lounge, and it recently opened its 250th site.
After visiting the area a few years ago to seek out potential sites, Loungers opened its very first regional venue, the Martino Lounge, in Morpeth’s Sanderson Arcade in August 2023, which was very quickly followed by Coltello Lounge in Cramlington’s Manor Walks shopping centre and Muro Lounge in Hexham.

At the end of last year the popular cafe company expanded its reach even further, creating more than 30 jobs with the launch of the huge Durano Lounge in the former Toy Museum in Tynemouth, overlooking Longsands beach. The move into the North Tyneside building marks the first time that the former museum has been occupied since the museum closed in 2012, after previous bids to transform the site failed to come to fruition.
Now the company has Gosforth in its sights, as it has formally applied for a licence to operate from the former Co-op store on the High Street. The application shows the business wants to operate from 10am to midnight at the site, at 92 High Street.
Loungers’ venues are known for their family-friendly environments and food and drink offerings, which appeal to all types of guests. It caters to people throughout the day with a varied all-day menu, with breakfasts, brunch and lunch, dinners and drinks, including kid’s, gluten-free and vegan menus. It also prides itself on providing activities for families including a selection of games, books, colouring pencils and pads, plus high chairs and baby-changing facilities.
