Newcastle United ace Alexander Isak blasts injury rumours with three-word reply to doubters

Newcastle United have been handed a big boost after Alexander Isak returned to the training ground with no ill effects from Sunday’s FA Cup defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion.

The Sweden striker came off at the end of the 2-1 defeat at St James’ Park due to “tightness” but the groin injury that ruled him out of the 2-0 defeat at Liverpool is not being deemed a major issue. Isak was one of the players used at the club’s Carabao Cup media day for broadcasters at Benton today.

When asked how he was feeling ahead of the Wembley showpiece later this month, a beaming Isak, simply replied: “I am fine.” Given Newcastle’s woes in recent days, with Lewis Hall out for the season with an ankle issue, and Anthony Gordon definitely suspended after the club were advised not to appeal to the FA over his obvious red card, seeing Isak moving freely was being looked at as a major plus by insiders today.

On Sunday, head coach Eddie Howe had said: “Alex just felt a bit of general tightness. I don’t think it was an injury, it was just general tightness, but we felt as though he had to come off.”

It now remains to be seen whether Newcastle decide to rest Isak at West Ham in order to guarantee he starts at Wembley against Liverpool for the big day on March 16. But the truth is Howe is down to a threadbare squad and is working with a limited pool of stars meaning a stint on the bench would not be a huge surprise at the London Stadium on Monday night.
