Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali has been earmarked for a few more howitzers after his thunderbolt strike against Brentford last night.
Tonali argued that his first goal – a clean as a whistle strike that swerved past the goalkeeper – was definitely better than his second. The Italy star’s volley at the Leazes End which doubled Newcastle’s lead had initially looked like a wonder goal but TV replays showed that it had taken a slight deflection.
Tonali was quick to put reporters right on which goal was best, but his team-mates have now been given food for thought when it comes to his goalscoring capabilities. Remember long before Tonali’s dark days of being banned for illegal betting, he started his career with a goal in the 5-1 win against Aston Villa in August 2023 – with 372 days between the strikes!
His career stats may show a long gap due to his 10-month ban but Eddie Howe, speaking from a backroom point of view, warned there was much more to come from Tonali as far as his incredible threat from an offensive point of view was concerned.
The 6ft 7in Blyth lad Howe told Chronicle Live: “He has an unbelievable strike from distance. He hits the ball cleaner than anyone I’ve seen.
“He’s looked a lot more comfortable deeper on the pitch. It’s brilliant to see from my perspective. He’s an explosive player and he’s really helped us on transitions, putting out a lot of fires with his pace.
“He’s a big signing and you want your big signings to do well. Everyone is seeing what a good player he is.”
