Newcastle United hit by major injury blow as star ruled out for month amid Alexander Isak update

Newcastle United have discovered the extent of the damage suffered by Harvey Barnes in the FA Cup tie against Bromley. The £38million man went off at half-time in the 3-1 win with his head down and the worst news has now been confirmed after the player’s muscle injury was rubber stamped by medics.

Howe confirmed the devastating blow today at his press conference, telling reporters: “He’s had a scan. It’s not too bad, but he will miss the upcoming games. We’re looking at around a month.”

But Howe is hopeful that he will not have any further injury issues for his stars despite a long list of absentees against the League Two side. Joe Willock, Sven Botman, Jacob Murphy and Alexander Isak all missed out on Sunday.

On those absentees, Howe added: “We’ll have a look at them again today. They were left out with genuine reasons, all different things, but nothing major we hope. So minor problems that we needed to settle down. Fingers crossed, they’ll be there or thereabouts.”

Speaking about Isak’s status, Howe told Chronicle Live: “We have to be careful of course. That’s why I did what I did against Arsenal. He is such a valuable player. Fingers crossed he will be fine and take his place in the team.”

Isak can break a club Premier League record if he scores for the eighth consecutive top-flight match. Howe said: “He’s desperate to play.

“Those runs I’m not really too focused on, and I’m not too interested in, but I understand the individuals will care deeply about them. I’d love Alex to continue to score. I think the most important thing for me is that the team is functioning well for him and he’s functioning well for the team. The two things go hand in hand together.

“We have looked like scoring goals recently, that’s such a big thing for our confidence levels. He’s played a big part in that, hopefully that continues.”
