Newcastle United issue ‘exciting’ new training ground update as PIF make ambition clear

Newcastle United CEO Darren Eales knows that even after a £15million spruce up at the club’s current Benton base that the Magpies can’t stop there.

Insight in Liverpool’s stunning new Amazon Prime documentary shows that the Reds’ AXA Training Centre is light years ahead of Benton. And former Newcastle director Amanda Staveley toured other training sites such as Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City to see how much work needs to be done for United to be considered one of the big boys as far as a new HQ is concerned.

Even Leicester have a swimming pool and hotel at their plush HQ with Newcastle bosses knowing that a good training ground could sway the mind of a potential new signing.

Eales stated, when talking to reporters this week, that the plan is still very much to move from Benton to a new site in the future with PIF chiefs keen to pump PSR-free investment into the project.

Eales said: “On the training ground, the work is going on in the background. And again, it feels like every club I’ve been at, we did it at Tottenham, we did it at Atlanta.

“We’re doing a lot of that work that you need to do in the background to be in position when we’ve identified the site that’s appropriate to then go with full speed.”

Talk of a move to Gosforth Park has been mooted since the takeover went through but never stood up by United sources. Eales said: “All of that work is going on in the background. And at the right time, obviously, we’re going to come to a point when we’ll be making that public, and we’ll bring you all in and explain where it is, what we’re looking to do.

“But it’s something that we’re certainly excited about. And it’s something that, again, speaks to ownership. We know that we have to do that. That’s something to get where ownership wants to get to; we need to have a new training ground.”
