Newcastle United will have to wait until the summer transfer to make a move for 1. FC Nurnberg hotshot Stefanos Tzimas – and will face competiion from Premier League rivals Liverpool.
The Magpies have been credited with interest in the 19-year-old, along with Arne Slot’s Reds, Aston Villa, Chelsea and Brighton, but Nurnberg sporting director Olaf Rebbe insists no January deal will be done. Tzimas is actually on loan at the 2. Bundesliga side from PAOK in his native Greece, with an €18m deal already agreed between the two clubs.
However, it is thought Nurnberg will look to sell the striker on in the summer, prompting interest from Premier League sides. He has scored eight goals in 14 league appearances in Germany this season, and could be sold on for around €25m next summer.
But when asked if Tzimas would leave in the January window, Rebbe told BILD: “We will not be letting go of any key players in the winter. But with a view to the summer, we are of course already examining a number of options.”
Tzimas scored five goals to help PAOK win the Greek Super League last season before moving to Nurnberg on loan last June. In 2023 he was named as one of the Guardian’s 60 best young talents in world football in their Next Generation series.
Newcastle are thought to be looking for back-up striker options, with Callum Wilson out of contract in the summer and having suffered terrible luck with injuries over the last few seasons. Will Osula marked his second start for the club with a goal in Sunday’s 3-1 FA Cup win over Bromley, but United are thin on the ground when it comes to first-team cover for Alexander Isak.
