Newcastle United player ratings as key man bags man of the match in front of England boss

Anthony Gordon left the field with blood streaming down his face after a tireless man of the match shift at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Playing in front of watching England boss Thomas Tuchel, the Newcastle United forward put himself straight into the mind of the new Three Lions coach with an effective display. Gordon managed five goal attempts and while he should have done better with an effort from close range after the break, he was the man Eddie Howe told his stars to get on the ball and relieve the pressure on his side in the capital.

But Gordon was not alone as far as the man of the match competition went with Tino Livramento, Bruno Guimaraes and Martin Dubravka all impressing. Tuchel left his seat after Gordon went off.

The Magpies fell behind on four minutes when Pedro Porro’s cross found Dominic Solanke after he’d escaped the attentions of Sven Botman to head home. But Newcastle levelled two minutes later when Lucas Bergvall tried to play a pass forward but the ball hit Joelinton before Bruno Guimaraes slipped in Anthony Gordon to make it 1-1.

Newcastle went ahead when Jacob Murphy’s cross from the right was poked home by Alexander Isak with the slightest touch in front of goal.

Here’s how the players rated overall at Spurs:

Martin Dubravka 8

Made a couple of key saves in the second half and endured a knee in the face from Solanke. Coped well under severe pressure. An inspired second half display.

Tino Livramento 8

A display of international standard in front of the watching Tuchel.

Sven Botman 7

Got over his early error with a decent display. Will benefit from the full 90 minutes in the tank.

Dan Burn 7

Took a few blows as Spurs tried to rough the big defender from Blyth up.

Lewis Hall 7

A tidy display as he piled on pressure down the left.

Joelinton 7

Played his part in the equaliser and fought well.

Bruno Guimaraes 8

Another top notch display in the middle. Opened Spurs up on countless occasions and drew fouls. A big hand in the equaliser.

Sandro Tonali 8

Sprayed the ball around with purpose and dictated several attacks.

Anthony Gordon 9

Spurs tried to stop him using fair means and foul to leave him bloodied and brusied. A genuine attacking threat and quickly hauled Newcastle back into the game early on to impress watching England boss Thomas Tuchel. Man of the match with 46 touches and five goal attempts in total.

Jacob Murphy 7

Got some joy down the right in the first half with an assist for Isak and put another on a plate for the Sweden star.

Alexander Isak 7

Scored one and missed one. Held the ball up well overall. Booked on his way off for time wasting.
