Newcastle United star is ‘so consistent it’s ridiculous’

Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon ‘can do absolutely everything’ and is a England star of the future, according to former Manchester City and Aston Villa defender Micah Richards.

The Magpies’ No 10 has had a sensational season in black-and-white, scoring 11 goals in his breakthrough campaign with the club and, crucially, contributing 10 assists. He has been one of the side’s most consistent performers, something that has proven invaluable to Eddie Howe given the number of injuries he has had to contend with this season.

It is that consistency which has stood out for Richards, who admits Gordon has come a long way since his Everton days. Newcastle paid around £40m to prise him away from Goodison Park after he was also linked with Chelsea, in a deal which raised a few eyebrows at the time.

Indeed he didn’t make a huge impression on the squad in the first few months following his arrival on Tyneside, but after starring for England Under-21s in last summer’s U21 European Championship success, Gordon has not looked back.

“Remember when he was linked to Chelsea before he went to Newcastle and everyone was laughing at him?” he told the Rest is Football podcast in a discussion with Gary Lineker and United legend Alan Shearer. “Now he is so consistent it’s ridiculous.

“Whether he is getting assists from crosses, whether he is taking on his man, whether he is defending for the team . . . I know you (Shearer) put him in your England team moving forward for the Euros, but I wouldn’t disagree with you now.

“He can do absolutely everything. The improvement since the Under-21s when they won it (European Championships) last summer has just been enormous. What a player he has turned out to be.”

Gordon is looking to continue his excellent form as United aim to qualify for Europe, with a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad also up for grabs. He made his debut for the senior side in the March friendlies against Brazil and Belgium.
