Newcastle United transfer negotiations confirmed as owner says ‘we’re in talks’

Fenerbahce vice president and Hull City owner Acun Ilicali has confirmed that transfer talks have begun between the Turkish club and Newcastle United over the transfer of Lloyd Kelly this winter.

The Turkish giants, who are currently managed by Jose Mourinho, have decided to target the centre-back after a slow start to his career at St James’ Park. Kelly was signed in the summer from Bournemouth, reuniting with Eddie Howe who had brought him to the South Coast from Bristol City in 2019.

Kelly was a wanted man thanks to his performances for the Cherries. However, his start to life at Newcastle has been difficult.

Having initially been starting and playing his part for the Magpies, the 26-year-old started seven consecutive Premier League matches on the bench and was an unused substitute in each of those games. He played the full 90 minutes against Bromley in the FA Cup on Sunday but speculation has been building regarding him exiting the club.

Speaking to Fenerbahce’s official media channels, Ilicali was quick to express his club’s desire to sign Kelly this winter. “We are in talks for a Lloyd Kelly transfer,” he explained.

“He’s a player we’re interested in. If we can reach an agreement, we will transfer this player.”

It is not known whether Fenerbahce are looking for a loan or permanent deal. But, with Kelly still having until the summer of 2029 left on his contract, a permanent switch may not be feasible.

According to The Telegraph, Newcastle have rejected an initial offer from Fenerbahce for Kelly. It is thought their bid was substantially below what the North East club were expecting.
