Newcastle United’s injury situation is getting out of control. Eddie Howe’s threadbare squad have suffered two huge setbacks this week with the news that Sven Botman and Lewis Hall are both set for operations.
Hall’s injury was confirmed on Wednesday by the club. The left-back, who has been in superb form for the Magpies this season, has broken a bone in his foot and will go under the knife, ruling him out of not just Newcastle’s Carabao Cup final and the upcoming England internationals, but also the remainder of the season.
Botman has been suffering from a fresh knee injury after returning to the fray after an ACL rehabilitation. However, it has been revealed that he too must have an op to fix the damage to his other knee.
Jamaal Lascelles is another defender unavailable to Howe. The club captain has yet to recover from his own knee injury and is not expected to return until May. Forgotten man Jamal Lewis is also on the sidelines and unlikely to play for United again before his contract expires in the season.
Eddie Howe’s options are thin on the ground, certainly defensively after the departure of Lloyd Kelly to Juventus in the winter transfer window. Matt Targett is fit again, but has barely played for 18 months, while Kieran Trippier and Tino Livramento both suffered discomfort in the FA Cup defeat against Brighton.
Alexander Isak’s injury situation remains a concern, although the striker reported himself fit at a media briefing this week. With Callum Wilson and Harvey Barnes struggling for form, Joelinton having only just returned from his own injury and Anthony Gordon suspended, it means Howe has a real headache ahead of the trip to West Ham United on Monday.
He could call on a number of Academy stars to bolster the ranks, but the player who has been at the front of the queue recently, Trevan Sanusi, has revealed he is now out for another eight weeks. The winger’s season could be over as Newcastle Under-21s final Premier League 2 match is away at Manchester City on April 11.
Sanusi, who made his first team debut as a substitute in the FA Cup tie against Bromley in January, has an ankle injury which looks set to keep him on the sidelines for three months. Confirming his setback on Instagram last week, Sanusi wrote: “Unfortunate to be out for another eight weeks after being out for five.”
Sanusi picked up the injury back in January shortly after the Bromley game. The 17-year-old then started the 4-0 FA Youth Cup defeat against Aston Villa but has not been seen in action since.
The teenager caught Howe’s eye in pre-season after signing his first professional contract at Newcastle last year. The winger travelled with the first-team squad to Japan in pre-season and also featured in the Sela Cup matches against Girona and Stade Brest at St James’ Park.
Following the Bromley match, Howe said: “Tre hasn’t been consistently training with us, He’s been mainly with the [Under-21s] but I’ve been watching those games and getting regular feedback there.
“I think he had a good pre-season, went back [to the academy] and has come strong again in recent weeks. Today will be a big moment for him. I’d love to see him get more opportunities but that will have to depend on how others are playing.
“He’s got standout qualities. He’s confident, you saw that today when he came on. He will always front people up one vs one and try to beat them. Of course, he needs to add that physicality that he’ll need to survive. People will target him.
“He has a nice way of riding tackles and really good balance. Like most young players, there’s stuff to improve. His end product needs to get better. We will continue to work with him on that.”
