Newcastle United know they lost some ground on Wednesday night in the race for Champions League football after a 2-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield.
A first-half goal from Dominik Szoboszlai gave Arne Slot’s side the lead after just 11 minutes after some disappointing defending from the Magpies left the midfielder in acres of space inside the 18-yard box. Eddie Howe’s side did have opportunities themselves, with the best of those falling to Callum Wilson, back in the team after an injury to Alexander Isak, but he was lacking in match sharpness in his first start of the season.
The Reds doubled their lead just after the hour mark after another disappointing turn over in possession in midfield by Newcastle. Alexis Mac Allister broke from deep, played a one-two with Mo Salah before finding the back of the net from inside the middle of the 18-yard box.
The Magpies had no response as the Reds took a step closer to the Premier League title, while the Toon stay in sixth after Man City defeated Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea’s win over Southampton.
